What Care Is Provided in Senior Living Communities

Nov 5, 2024

Senior living communities today offer a wide range of care options, and it’s important to understand the different levels of care before you begin your search. From independent living and assisted living to memory support and skilled nursing, there’s care available to meet everyone’s unique needs.

Senior living care options

Independent living

Independent living is a care option available for seniors who don’t require specific medical assistance but wish to enjoy an active, maintenance-free lifestyle in a community setting with emergency care available should they need it. Independent living is frequently offered in a community with additional levels of care, like assisted living or memory care.

Independent living residences may include the following:

  • Gated senior communities
  • Luxury apartments, condos, and townhomes
  • Fixed-price and low-income senior apartments
  • Intentional communities that offer shared communal spaces and resident-led programming and decision-making

Assisted living

Assisted living is an ideal senior living care option for older adults who want to remain as independent as possible but need assistance with everyday tasks, like personal care, managing medication, and household chores.

Assisted living often includes routine housekeeping, three daily meals, transportation, and laundry services. Residents can take advantage of a social calendar of activities, special events, and outings with their peers.

Assisted living residences may also include the following:

  • Private apartment suites with kitchenettes
  • Personalized assistance
  • 24-hour emergency call and response systems
  • Wellness checks

Memory care

Older adults living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia may benefit from residential memory care. Memory care provides residents living with cognitive decline a secure, safe, and comforting environment with specialized care and intentional and meaningful programming.

Memory care communities are designed with easy-to-navigate layouts, adequate lighting, and calm spaces. Abe’s Garden Community Memory Support is an I’m Still Here® Center of Excellence certified by the Hearthstone Institute. This means our memory support community is committed to offering opportunities that create positive, fulfilling experiences that encourage engaged, purposeful living.

Memory care residences may include the following:

  • Single or double occupancy suites with zero-barrier entry bathrooms
  • Built-in cueing wardrobes and illuminating night tables
  • 24/7 nursing services, including medication management and distribution
  • Assistance with activities of daily living
  • Three nutritious meals and snacks
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
  • Secure access to nature in a private courtyard

Skilled nursing

Skilled nursing is necessary for older adults who require round-the-clock care with doctors, nurses, and aides readily available to meet care needs. Often, skilled nursing includes a team, such as occupational, physical, and speech therapists, to help manage or slow the progression of chronic conditions.

Skilled nursing and rehabilitation residences may include the following:

  • Private or semi-private rooms
  • Shared living spaces for dining, activities, and leisure
  • Full calendar of engaging social activities, special events, and outings
  • Three nutritious meals and snacks
  • Housekeeping and laundry services
  • 24/7 nursing care and emergency response
